The coronavirus pandemic has surpassed another grim milestone.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, the number of cases globally has surpassed 18 million.

More than half a million people worldwide have died from the virus.

Mexico now has the third-highest number of coronavirus deaths with 47,000 known fatalities, with only Brazil and the US recording higher numbers.

The US also has the highest number of confirmed cases, with over 46 million infections, accounting for more than a quarter of the global total.

California has become the first state to top half a million coronavirus cases.

On Sunday the state recorded almost 509,200 total infections.

The state, which was one of the first to shut down, will have to endure stricter shut-downs of indoor activities if numbers don't improve in the coming days.

State leaders fear the surge is due to residents becoming more relaxed in practicing social distancing.

This comes as Dr. Deborah Birx warns that the pandemic is now more widespread than it was earlier this year.
